Started by Nellie Verne Burt McPherson, president of the Bement Illinois Women’s Club. It was in appreciation to her favorite author, Irving Bacheller. During WW1, Nellie Verne Burt McPherson had been hospitalized and enjoyed his short story books. Thus, prompted her to write expressing the delight in his books and the beginning of Authors Day.
