Short Story with Quiz
There once was a doctor whose
name was Wally. He was an older gentleman with a warm smile and crooked glasses,
and he always had a good word to spread, even in the worst situations.
Wally would call up all his patients
during this pandemic, just to make sure they were ok. But there was one
patient, named Luann, a middle-aged mother of three grade schoolboys, who
didn’t really understand what was going on. And who could blame her? We’re all
confused about the same thing.
One afternoon, Doctor Wally
cleared his entire schedule and was ready to explain everything to Luann,
including what a pandemic is.
Ring, ring.
“Hello!” Luann said with a
smile on her face, as she was always glad to talk to friends and family.
“Hello, Luann. This is Doctor
Wally. I know you have some trouble with this corona situation we’re all
going through but rest assured—by the end of this call, you will know
everything about it,” Doctor Wally said, using a friendly and almost jolly
tone.

“I’m so glad you called,
Doctor. I’ve been so confused by the news and what other people are saying,”
Luann told her doctor.
“First, Luann, let’s cover
the word ‘pandemic’: it is a situation in which a disease or illness transmits
from one person to another and spreads to other countries around the world.”
“This sounds scary, Doctor
Wally,” Luann told him, her voice trembling.
“Not to worry. There are
methods that will put a stop to it. We just have to be a little more cautious
than we were before and respect some boundaries,” he told her.
“Boundaries? What do you
mean?” Luann asked.
“Well, my dear Luann, there
are a few things that we should do. First, we must wash our hands. Well, we did
before, but now we should do it a little more often. It’s not that hard and
washing them for 20 seconds each time is enough. Think about it: it takes more
time to go to the fridge and grab a soda than to wash your hands,” Doctor Wally
assured her.
“That sounds easy. What else
can we do besides wash our hands?” Luann asked.
2. “The second thing—but just
as important—is wearing a face mask,” he informed her.
“Like Halloween? Luann asked
excitedly.
“Well, not exactly, but you
can think about it like that. The masks are very efficient at stopping the
spread of the disease. If someone is ill and the person is wearing a mask,
there is a small chance that they will make another person sick,” the Doctor explained.
“That’s easy, too,” Luann
said.
3. “And the last of these
three things we should do is social distancing,” Dr. Wally told her.
“This one doesn’t sound that
much fun,” Luann said, feeling disappointed.
“On the contrary, Luann. When
you meet someone, you must keep a distance of six feet between you and them.
And this can be done easily when you meet your friends to ride bikes or
rollerblades. And if you want to shake hands, you can do it but with a twist.
You both can use your elbows and touch them instead of your hands. It would be
like a secret handshake that only you and your friend know,” the doctor
explained.
“This does sound like fun,”
Luann told him.
“Well, if that’s all, I’d
better call other patients. They surely are as confused as you,” Doctor Wally
said.
“As confused as I WAS,” Luann
said. “It’s all clear to me now, and I know what to do to stay safe.”
“Okay Luann, have a wonderful
day and stay safe!” Doctor Wally said before preparing to hang up the phone.
“Stay safe, doctor, and thank
you!” Luann said.
