Women Rock! Day   Jan. 3rd   National Day

Celebrated annually on January 3rd  “Women Rock! Day” women have made an immense contribution to rock and roll and honor that contribution. The day takes place on the anniversary of the date in 1987 when Aretha Franklin became the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame began inducting members in 1986 and has continued to do so each year since. Many women have been inducted since Aretha Franklin, such as The Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas, The Shirelles, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, Grace Slick as part of Jefferson Airplane, Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks as part of Fleetwood Mac, Dusty Springfield, and Nina Simone.

However, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame continues to be dominated by men. Elvis Presley. Chuck Berry. Jerry Lee Lewis. Little Richard. Buddy Holly. When it comes to rock and roll, it is usually male artists and performers who are first remembered as its architects, innovators, and keepers of the flame.  But 2022 has change the narrative e a bit!

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2022

inductees are Dolly Parton, Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, Eurythmics, Eminem, Carly Simon, Duran Duran, Lionel Richie, Judas Priest, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Harry Belafonte, Jimmy Iovine, Sylvia Robinson, Elizabeth Cotten and Allen Grubman.

National Trivia Day 4th  - is to celebrate all things factual. Facts that not many know but are essential and interesting.

It’s not related to any religion or faith; it doesn’t even have a rich background. It’s just a fun day to spend time with the people you love, have a conversation about something knowledgeable, and make new friends.

Every year, on this holiday, the collector recognizes his brains’ breakaways unrelated, meaningless information, facts, history, and quotes. They are the ones who usually share these amazing stories when friends and family do not expect them.

Do you want to be one of those geniuses? Well, join the club!

By way of this fun little holiday, so much information is delivered to us about our history, culture, and origins in small, consumable pieces. There’s not one good reason not to participate in this day.

History of National Trivia Day

The game was first founded by two men named Chris Haney and Scott Abbott at Montreal, Québec, Canada, in 1979, who had become frustrated when they found that pieces from their Scrabble game had disappeared and got inspired them to create their own game.

Trivial Pursuit became an almost instant hit worldwide, and a trivial craze began.

Interesting facts about National Trivia Day:

  1. The first book of Trivia, Trivialities: Bits of Information by Logan Pearsall, was the first-ever book written on Trivia. It included short write-ups about various things and commonplace moments, much like an encyclopedia.
  2. In 1966, the Great Midwest Trivia contest was first held at Lawrence University. Its first question was, “Who was Superman’s Father?”
  3. In 1981 the famous board game, Trivial Pursuit was launched, which is still given credit to have popularized a day a whole lot.
  4. 1988, “Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader” was published, which had exciting facts and Trivia to read while you’re in the loo.

National Spaghetti Day – Jan 4th

The popularity of spaghetti and pasta was bolstered by the Age of Sail, and because it could be dried. By the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, spaghetti was a common meal throughout Sicily and Italy.

Spaghetti factories established in the nineteenth century further increased its popularity in Italy. And factories producing it helped spread its popularity around the Mediterranean.

Tomatoes didn't become a staple in Italian cooking until the nineteenth century; tomato-based sauces to go with spaghetti are a more recent creation.

Today, in Italy, spaghetti is often served with tomato sauce, which may contain herbs such as basil and oregano, and olive oil, meat, and vegetables. Grated hard cheeses such as Pecorino Romano, Parmesan, and Grana Padano are often sprinkled on top.

Spaghetti, a long, cylindrical, and thin pasta made of milled wheat and water, is celebrated today. Its name comes from an Italian word meaning "thin string" or "twine."

Spaghetti with meatballs: Italian-American dish with spaghetti, tomato sauce, and meatballs.

Spaghetti bolognese: spaghetti with tomato sauce and minced beef; served internationally but in Italy bolognese sauce is usually served with another type of pasta.

Spaghetti fried drunken noodle: a style popular in Thailand.

Spaghetti with chili con carne: popular in parts of United States.

Spaghetti primavera: created in New York City by Sirio Maccioni, owner of Le Cirque restaurant; ingredients include cream sauce, garlic, and fresh spring vegetables; was an improvised creation as there was nothing else around to garnish the pasta with besides vegetables.

National Bird Day- Jan 5th

National Bird Day was created by Born Free USA, (which was the Animal Protection Institute until 2007) and The Avian Welfare Coalition, to reduce the suffering of wild and captive birds.

The day is meant to raise awareness of the destructive bird trade and cruel breeding mills, and to work for the improvement of conditions for birds already in captivity.

Did you know?

Millions of birds are captured in the wild each year, or are produced in captivity by breeders, who along with pet stores, sell them for profit. Many birds die in captivity before even being sold. Exotic birds have inherent behavioral and physical needs, which are often not met. They are still wild animals even though they are often treated as if they are not, and the confinement of birds to cages can lead to self-destructive behaviors.

How to Observe National Bird Day

·        You can take part in the day-

·        If you want a bird, adopt a displaced bird instead of one from a pet store, and only do it if you can make a lifetime care commitment.

·        Before adopting a bird such as a parrot, make sure you know their needs.

·        This will help stop more bird displacement in the future.

·        You could help raise the demand for birds in the wild, instead of helping to raise the demand for birds as pets.

·        Support conservation efforts to help increase ecotourism, which will allow more birds to be seen in the wild.

·        Lastly, spend the day seeing wild birds yourself, whether they are exotic, tropical or not. Check to see if pet stores in your community sell birds.
