March is ‘Mad for Plaid’

  Mad for Plaid’

Sunday March 7th    ‘Cereal Day’

Until the 1860s, breakfast was dominated by eggs, bacon, and sausage. Reformers began preaching that eating too much meat was both physically and spiritually harmful, and cereal was looked at as a nutritious remedy of sorts.

The first American cooked cereals were corn-mush porridges that had been adapted from Native Americans. Quaker Oats, made from hulled oats, was created in 1877. Cream of Wheat appeared in 1894.

The first cold cereal was invented by Dr. James Caleb Jackson, and was made of hard, bland bran nuggets that had to be soaked overnight and were hard to digest. It was called granula.

Cereal is celebrated and eaten today! Cereal, in general, may be a name for any grain, such as wheat, barley, oats, or corn. But since the end of the nineteenth century in America, cereal has usually meant breakfast cereal—now the most popular breakfast food in the country. It gained popularity at that time, as a healthier alternative to other foods.

What is your favorite cereal?

Buddee’s favorite is Chex and Post Raisin Bran.

How it Grows.

My tummy wants food, that’s yummy and healthy, like an apple. A big red/green/yellow, juicy apple, it’s divine! But wait! Where do we get these apples from? From market! Yes, but from where do the sellers get them? No idea? Let’s listen to a story then:

One day, Liana, 4 years old, was having an apple and noticed little black seeds inside. She asked her mommy, “Why do apples have these seeds?”

Her mother answered, “So that, we get more apples from them.”

Liana was surprised by this response, “How do we get apples from these tiny seeds?”

Liana’s mother took her to a beautiful, sunny, green garden, where they purchased more apple seeds and a few vegetables too. At home, with many colorful flowers and plants around. Liana’s mother held a garden shovel, to dig the soil, to make a hole. She put seeds inside.

“Liana when I place the seeds inside the hole. You can fill the hole with soil, okay?” said her Mom. “This way the seeds can grow peacefully.”

Her mother gave her a green watering pail to water the seeds, as the plant was thirsty.

Liana asked, “Can I have an apple from here tomorrow?”

Her Mother smiled and tickled her, “Do you eat healthy food and drink milk and water to grow?

Liana replied. “Yes!”

Her mother said, “Similarly, it’ll grow by having sunlight, water, and soil. It’s plant food. We need to look after them, the way I look after you. So, we’ll not have them hungry and thirsty.

Our love and care will allow them to sprout in a few weeks, and later, the roots will grip soil inside and stems to grow upward, with leaves hanging from them.

Within a year, you’ll see a big apple tree, which will start giving us apples in two years.  Therefore, my dear child - you’ve to wait, till you’re 6. When we’ll share them with our neighbors, friends and family as well.”

So, this is how we grow plants and get tasty fruits and vegetables. Let’s have an apple now and start growing our apple tree.

FACT: The plants make their food by the process called photosynthesis, in which plants get energy from sunlight, absorb the carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, and release Oxygen(O2).
